Alice 2.0 Programming, Intro
Alice was designed to teach object-oriented principles to novice programmers, all while helping them to create exciting, three-dimensional worlds for animations and games. This course will show you how to create programs that use basic programming concepts like variables, decisions, events, loops, and arrays. The best part is that you'll be able to learn and practice these techniques while creating programs in a three-dimensional world. This makes programming more fun and easier to learn. By the end of the course, you'll be able to make interesting three-dimensional worlds that your audience can view like movies or play like interactive video games. You'll also be able to take the concepts you've learned here and apply them to other object-oriented languages like Java, C++, C#, or Visual Basic.  REQUIREMENTS: Alice v2.0 is a free download at www.alice.org. There are Alice 2.0 versions for Microsoft Windows (ME, NT, 2000, XP, and Vista). Additionally, there are Alice 2.0 releases for Mac OSX and Linux. You will also need Internet access; e-mail; and the Netscape, Firefox, or Internet Explorer Web browser.

C# Programming, Intermediate
Build upon your current knowledge of programming logic by writing Graphical User Interface (GUI) applications in the C# programming language. This course will show you how to write professional looking applications with many of the common GUI controls, such as buttons, labels, text boxes, check boxes, and radio buttons. You'll also learn how to put menus and toolbars into your program to make them easier to use. And later in the course, you'll find out how to make your program interact with sequential files, random access files, and databases. This six-week course will walk you through computer application design and implementation by giving you real examples that you can enter as you learn. Since practicing is the best way to learn programming, most lessons have more than one example, and each provides a programming problem you can solve to demonstrate your new knowledge.
REQUIREMENTS:
Completion of Mike Orsega's "Introduction to C# Programming" course (or equivalent experience), Microsoft Visual C# 2005 Express Edition, Microsoft Windows XP, Internet access, e-mail, and the Netscape or Firefox or Internet Explorer Web browser.

C++ Programming, Intro
Learn how to program in C++ from a master programming instructor and published author. In this project-oriented course, you'll skip all the gobbledygook and get right to programming--even if you have no prior programming experience! Before you know it, you'll be putting together programs that have their own windows and controls, and you'll see how easy programming really is. In the course, you'll see how the world around us is built up by objects--things that have qualities and capabilities, and you'll explore how you can take that information and write a computer program that models the world around us. You'll then see that this is the actual technique that professional programmers use to build their programs. By the end of the course, you'll be using Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Express Edition to write real programs for Microsoft Windows. REQUIREMENTS: Microsoft Windows 2000, 2003, XP, or Vista, Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Express Edition (free Express edition can be downloaded from Microsoft), Internet access, e-mail, and the Internet Explorer or Netscape or Firefox Web browser.

Comp TIA A+ Certification Prep, Basic
Time to roll up those sleeves and dive inside the personal computer! The Basic A+ Certification Prep course teaches you about the hardware common to virtually every personal computer - including microprocessors, RAM, power supplies, motherboards, BIOS, CMOS, the expansion bus, floppy drives, and hard drives. You'll learn how things work, how to configure everything, and how to troubleshoot in real world environments. This class gives you the knowledge upon which you'll base the rest of your A+ Certification studies and helps you take that first step to becoming an excellent PC hardware technician. So what are you waiting for?!?
REQUIREMENTS: A solid conceptual and practical knowledge of Windows 2000 or XP and preferably some experience with Windows 98 or ME; Internet access with e-mail and a current version of a Web browser such as Internet Explorer or Netscape. It's also recommended that you have a PC that you can take apart and put back together again. This can be anything from an ancient Intel 286 to a newer 486 or beyond. Because of the dangers of electro-static discharge (to the machine, not the student), we do not require you to tear apart your own primary computer. This is, however, a class that trains you to be a hardware technician - having a machine to play with greatly helps your learning.
Note: This course covers CompTIA's requirements for the 2003 release of the A+ exams.

Comp TIA A+ Certification Prep, Intermediate
This course dives into the details of the various Windows operating systems covered by the A+ Certification exam. The Intermediate A+ Certification Prep course teaches you how to install, maintain, configure, and upgrade all current versions of Windows: NT, 9x, 2000, and XP. You'll also learn how to use the DOS-style command line for performing tech tasks. The course also covers the finer points of Windows navigation, such as little known shortcuts, and Windows hardware installation.
REQUIREMENTS: Successful completion of the Basic A+ Certification Prep course; Internet access with e-mail and a current Web browser such as Internet Explorer or Netscape; access to a PC running Windows 9x, and a PC running Windows 2000 or XP, so that you can learn the subtle (and not-so-subtle) differences between these two families of Windows. Although this course focuses on operating systems, you should have access to a hard drive that you can install, format, and partition, and to a couple of Plug and Play devices that you can practice installing. Because of the dangers of electro-static discharge (to the machine, not the student), we do not require you to tear apart your own primary computer (and definitely do not recommend that you format or partition your primary hard drive!). Note: This course covers CompTIA's requirements for the 2003 release of the A+ exams.

Comp TIA A+ Certification Prep, Advanced
The Advanced A+ Certification Prep course takes you through an extensive set of technologies, including SCSI, video, modems, printers, multimedia, portable PCs, and networking. You'll study the hardware and learn the software necessary to install, configure, and troubleshoot that hardware. REQUIREMENTS: Internet access, e-mail, and the Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer web browser. Successful completion of the Basic A+ Certification Prep and Intermediate A+ Certification Prep courses. A Windows 9x PC that you can experiment on. You will probably want to remove/install various devices, such as video, sound, and modems. Because of the dangers of electro-static discharge (to the machine, not the student), however, we do not require you to tear apart your own primary computer. This is a class that trains you to be a technician - having a machine to play with greatly helps your learning. You can pick up an old PC from second-hand stores, garage sales, or your Aunt Edna's attic.

Comp TIA Security+ Certification Prep
The U.S. Department of Labor forecasts that computer security and related computer-support specialties will be among the fastest-growing occupations through 2012. CompTIA's Security+ certificate is widely regarded as the entry-level certificate for this fast-growing field. Getting that certificate requires passing CompTIA's challenging SY0-101 exam. In this six-week course, you'll learn everything you need to know to pass the exam and get your Security+ certificate. This is not a course on how to study for the exam. This course is fully self-contained and contains everything you need to know to ace the exam and leave the exam center with your Security+ credential in-hand. REQUIREMENTS: CompTIA recommends that you have A+ and Network+ certifications, and two years on-the-job networking experience, prior to preparing for this exam. We don't require that much. But you should have substantial knowledge of TCP/IP networking prior to signing up for this course. You'll also need Internet access, e-mail, and the Netscape or Firefox or Internet Explorer Web browser.

Creating a Home Network
If you have more than one computer at home, creating a network makes a lot of sense. It allows you to easily share documents, photos, files, and peripherals (such as printers, drives, and Internet connections). This means that no matter which network computer you use, you'll always have the information and resources you need at hand. Fortunately, Windows XP Home Edition makes it easy to connect computers that are using it as an operating system. But you need to know how to get started and what steps to take. This course shows you the ins and outs of building a home network with Windows XP Home Edition. We'll start with all the networking terms, and then use those terms to identify the hardware and software you need to build your network. Then you'll learn how to install your networking hardware and configure Windows XP so your computers can talk to each other. And finally, we'll cover configuring printers and other peripherals. By the end of the course, you'll know how to manage and maintain your Windows XP network, and how to keep it secure. REQUIREMENTS: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, completion of Alan Simpson's "Introduction to Windows XP" online course (or equivalent Windows experience), Internet access, e-mail, and the Internet Explorer or Netscape or Firefox Web browser.

CSS & XHTML Intro
Learn how to create state-of-the-art Web sites using modern CSS and XHTML techniques. Take your existing HTML skills to the next level and start building sites like the pros. If you want to survive and excel in the fast-paced world of Web publishing, you're going to need to keep up with ever-evolving standards. Traditional HTML is rapidly becoming obsolete, as powerful new languages like CSS and XHTML gain popularity and mindshare among Web developers. CSS and XHTML not only make it easier for you to build and manage large Web sites, these powerful languages can also give you more precise control over the appearance of every page you build. Almost every Web development tool--including Dreamweaver, Microsoft Expressions Web, and Visual Web Developer--offer support for, and occasionally require the use of, CSS and XHTML. This course will provide you with the foundation you'll need to master two critical and fast-growing new Web languages. If you're a Web developer, why not begin your transition to CSS and XHTML today? REQUIREMENTS: A text editor (like Windows Notepad); basic computer skills; familiarity with files, folders, text editing, and copying and pasting; Internet access, e-mail, and the Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Netscape Web browser. Completion of our online Creating Web Pages course (or equivalent experience with HTML and Web publishing) is recommended.
