Fall 2010 Mountain Lake Sailing
You should not dismiss the value of learning/practicing sailing in small lakes - especially mountain lakes - as a way to improve your boat handling skills. Because of the smaller area, you find you have to maneuver more often, i.e. shorter distances between tacks, jibes etc. The local topography affects the wind strength and direction, very often quite suddenly which will tend to keep you on your toes. In other words you become sharper and more responsive. The skills learned on a lake transfer very well to the ocean.
