Adventures in Science & the Human Spirit Series Exploring Our Maps of Reality
Humanity has discovered a new creation story – the science story of how we came to be. This class will help you explore major scientific and spiritual worldviews, understand the current conversations about faith and reason, explore your own maps of reality, and consider human meaning and humanity’s future in a vast and perplexing universe.

Part #1: Where Have We Been? (Historical Maps)
For most of human history, the exploration of the natural world was contextualized within cultural and religious worldviews and the beginning of the universe and of human existence was shrouded in myth and mystery. As our primate ancestors left their African home and traveled into new lands, they also evolved physically, mentally, and culturally.  Spiritual responses to the world around them and the development of symbolic logic built foundational maps of reality for modern humans (Homo sapiens). This class considers primal worldviews, the Indo-European religions, and the outgrowth of the monotheistic traditions, which were instrumental in the development of Western, and scientific worldviews. You will be invited to examine how this historical path has informed your own world views.

Part #2: Where Are We Now? (Modern Maps)
There are many factors that differentiated Eastern and Western world views and the development and clash of scientific and monotheistic maps of reality, particularly in America. Modern science has become a discipline with purposes and methods different from those of traditional philosophical and theological inquiry. The scientific study of the world—even of the entire cosmos—has increasingly provided us with explanations for what was once considered entirely mystical and sacred. Science has provoked the development of technologies that have shifted human relational experience from primarily tribal to significantly global and has given us a new creation story which has had dramatic impact on worldviews, our maps of reality. This class explores various perspectives on the history and implications of the split between faith and reason and the dynamics of the science-religion dialogue. How do you personally reconcile faith and reason and how have you been affected by your personal and cultural experiences?

Part #3: What Are the Possibilities? (Exploring Science & Belief)
From the intellectual achievements of the Greeks, to the rise of modern science in the last four hundred years and the latest cosmological and evolutionary discoveries, science has continually challenged spiritual and mythical worldviews and transformed our world with technological development. Our domesticated animal partners and our tool and machine use have brought us to planetary dominance, while our scientific developments have changed the face of the earth. As evolutionary and cosmological theories of origins have become more widely accepted, spiritual adaptations have often taken new and innovative paths to meet these challenges to traditional beliefs. This class explores these new approaches that honor both objective, quantitative knowledge and subjective, intuitive thought, balancing these two diverse aspects of our human experience. It invites you to consider how you balance your own objective and subjective knowledge.

Part #4: Where Are We Gong? (Finding Meaning in a Vast Universe)
Radio and TV waves have been outbound into space for decades, and science is now actively searching for life in the universe. The space program has already given us new perspectives of our world, while Star Trek had sparked our imagination about what might be “out there.” Through humanity’s scientific and spiritual explorations, the fourteen billion year-old universe that birthed us, has come to know itself. A strange thought, perhaps, yet only in the last minuscule fraction of the life of the universe has there been any mind capable of considering its history (beyond a possible infinite mind!).  Many think that we stand at a crossroads in which we may be able to learn from our evolutionary path or spiritual intuitions and, at last, take charge of our future. This class considers the possibilities and challenges of affecting our own evolutionary path and what the future may hold for a very young species on a still young planet, in a solar system and a universe that are only just now coming to maturity. Can humanity map its own reality? The class also explores how our scientific and spiritual worldviews might drastically shift should we confirm the presence of life beyond earth. What if ET returns our call?
