Learn to do elegant brush
strokes to produce beautiful Chinese painting in XEIYI (HSEIH)
style. New students must come to the first day.
Please arrive promptly at 8:45 am to receive beginning
material and purchase supplies as necessary (Approx. $65).
New students do not need art background to enjoy this
exciting art form. Items to bring from home are listed
below.
All
supplies may be purchased at workshops (estimated cost of
supplies for beginner: $65).
Please bring the

absorbent paper towels such as Job Squad or Viva

piece of clean felt (at least a square yard in size)

Water container
(a plastic bowl or other wide mouth container that will
hold at least a pint White plates (2 or 3 medium size,
plastic, ceramic or plasticized picnic plates will do)

notebook paper (8 ½ X 11 for notes).

Making
Your Own Soy Candles
Learn to make your own
natural soy
candles! The NVSoy wax you will use is
100% vegetable oil and water-soluble,
making clean up a breeze, and will not add toxic carcinogens
and pollutants to the air you and your family breathe.
Paraffin wax is derived from the "sludge" at the bottom of
the oil barrel. Chemicals are added to allow it to release
fragrances and bleach is added to "whiten" it for any
color that may be added. NVSoy was is is 100% vegetable oil,

Beginning
Jewelry I
Learn to solder, forge
(hammer), bezel set cabochon stones, chain making and
surface embellishments to make a necklace, ring and
earrings, or pins that you can be proud to wear. Non-ferrous
metals such as sterling silver will be used,

Chinese
Calligraphy
Learn to write Chinese
characters, brush techniques, stroke order and different
styles of writing will be presented. Explore experimental
and "throw ink" techniques. Every student receives a work
booklet to take home. Supplies (approximately $40) are
available from the instructor. Students are asked to call
the instructor if you plan on bringing your own ink and
brushes. Bring a sack lunch.

Stained Glass
Learn the basic skills by
making a window of about 20 pieces using the copper foil
method. Many patterns will be available, including quilt
square designs, scenes and abstract. Designed for beginners

Printmaking & Accordion Book
In
this fun class students will use a credit card machine that
has been modified to use as a small printing press. The
resulting prints will be the size of a credit card,
approximately 3 3/8” x 2 1/8 “. Students will have the
opportunity to carve images into several mediums and then
print an edition that will be used as a class exchange
project. Students will then make an accordion book with
covers to house their collection of prints. Instructions on
how to modify a credit card machine will be supplied.
The

Coptic & Link Stitch Over Tapes
In this class students will use a Coptic
stitch over decorative tapes to create a beautiful journal.
This contemporary version adds interest and stability
through the addition of decorative tapes and a stable link
stitch. Students will design their own cover boards using
decorative paper, fold and punch sewing structures and
create a stunning sketch book or journal that opens flat.

Garden
Art and Mosaics
Create interesting accents for
your garden. Learn the basics of mosaic design by making a
flowerpot, gazing ball, birdbath, table and more. We will
also explore painting on tile and other garden art ideas.

Monotype
Screenprinting
Explore the serendipitous process of monotype screenprinting,
which lends itself to experimentation and a free approach to
art making. Using a variety of water-soluble materials to
draw and paint directly onto the screen, you will produce an
assortment of unique prints and learn simple registration
methods for over-printing. Experience the creative and
exciting adventures that can take place as the drawing and
printing progresses. Students receive their own screen to
keep.
NOTE:
Students will need to bring the
following: Cotton rags, Large household sponge, Spray mount
(repositional), plastic containers for mixing inks. Spray
bottle of Simple Green, Transparent duct tape, Masking tape,
18”x24” newsprint, x-acto knife, ruler, scissors, small

Daybook
for a New Year
In
this class students will fold and personalize two volumes to
serve as a page-a-day book using a simple but beautiful
structure. Each six-month daybook will be secured with an
elastic strap and sized to fit in the average shoulder bag.
We will embellish the pages with rubberstamp dates and
discuss ways to make a daybook part of everyday life.

Suminagashi
(Japanese Paper Marbling)
This unique form
of paper marbling developed in Japan. Once a closely held
family secret, it has traveled from the Heian Era
(794-1185) to our modern day. Learn the techniques of
floating inks and colors, manipulating and transferring them
to papers. Uses and applications of the results will be
discussed. Some supplies (ink, surfactant, color, books)
available from instructor. Students are encouraged to
bring a sack lunch.
