English Paper Piecing Samples by Lisa
Gray
Quiltmaking:
English Paper
Piecing
Learn English Paper Piecing
which dates back to 1777. Although grandmother’s flower
garden may be the most recognized English
paper pieced
pattern, it is certainly not the only pattern available.
This technique is precise, portable and simple to do. Select
from three possible projects. This class is for all levels.
The perfect project for traveling. Learn
techniques to create a small project (small quilt, wall
hanging or pin cushion) with Grandmother's Flower Garden,
Dresden Plate or Chrysanthemum blocks. This project uses
primarily scraps (approx 6 inches square or larger). Use a
variety of reproduction 1930's or 19th century prints on
muslin, Oriental fabrics, batiks.
Quiltmaking 1 Flyer
Kit available for purchase at the first class session.
Fabrics:
• Background: Two 14" square background pieces (the fabric
should contrast with your scraps so the design will show)
• Feature fabrics: 12 to 24 pieces—6" squares for scrappy or
equivalent in yardage for a uniform look
Supplies:
• 1 pkg Dresden Plate, Chrysanthemum, or Grandmother's
Flower Garden sampler papers from Paper Pieces (these are
available locally at the Cotton Ball in Morro Bay, Old Town
Quilt Shop in Orcutt)
• 1 spool thread—any color, use up old thread (cotton,
polyester or hand quilting thread)
• 1 spool thread to "match" or blend with fabrics (recommend
hand quilting thread)
• Needle, size 8 or 9
• Needle, size 10 or 11 (John James embroidery needles work
well)
• Needle threader (optional)
• Scissors
• Rotary cutter and small mat (optional)
