    Basic Drawing Skills
    This class has been created for those people who think they can’t draw or for those students currently taking art classes that need basic drawing skills to improve their work. Class will be structured around the needs of the students and will include basic skill instruction with lectures, demonstrations and practice to learn three dimensional drawing, composing and drawing objects, landscape drawing and use of a sketch book.     Beginning Tapestry Weaving I
    Creative! Fascinating! Come learn some basic tapestry weaving techniques and weave a sampler. With the techniques you will learn, you can weave a wide range of designs—abstracts, portraits, landscapes or whatever your imagination and creativity will dictate. Participants will find out about choosing warp and weft years, making butterflies, building woven shapes, weaving lines and much more. Finishing and mounting suggestions will be given so the sampler can become a small wall hanging. No prior weaving experience necessary. A $25 materials fee will be collected by the instructor on the first class session and will include the loan of a loom, bobbin, yarn and printed materials.     Your Life Story Quilt, Pillow or Table Runner
    Learn to make an improvisational quilt from the clothing and materials of everyday life. In this class participants will experience an active, hands-on context for cherished family memories, life changing events, or coming to terms with grief. Students will learn everything needed to know to finish their quilt. Techniques covered include basting, freehand marking, big-stitch hand quilting, tying, and binding. Quilting Flyer

Class will present the application of power and hand tools to the mills and cabinet trade and is designed to accommodate all levels of experience.     English Paper Piecing Samples by Lisa Gray

    Quiltmaking: English Paper Piecing
    Learn English Paper Piecing which dates back to 1777. Although grandmother’s flower garden may be the most recognized English paper pieced pattern, it is certainly not the only pattern available. This technique is precise, portable and simple to do. Select from three possible projects. This class is for all levels. The perfect project for traveling. Learn techniques to create a small project (small quilt, wall hanging or pin cushion) with Grandmother's Flower Garden, Dresden Plate or Chrysanthemum blocks. This project uses primarily scraps (approx 6 inches square or larger). Use a variety of reproduction 1930's or 19th century prints on muslin, Oriental fabrics, batiks. Quiltmaking 1 Flyer

    • Background: Two 14" square background pieces (the fabric should contrast with your scraps so the design will show)

    Suminagashi (Japanese Paper Marbling)
    This unique form of paper marbling developed in Japan. Once a closely held family secret, it has traveled from the Heian Era (794-1185) to our modern day. Learn the techniques of floating inks and colors, manipulating and transferring them to papers. Uses and applications of the results will be discussed. Items to bring from home are on the class registration receipt. Some supplies (ink, surfactant, color, books) available from instructor. Bring a sack lunch.

    Chinese Brush Painting
    Learn to do elegant brush strokes to produce beautiful Chinese painting in XEIYI (HSEIH) style. New students must come to the first day. Please arrive promptly at 8:45 am to receive beginning material and purchase supplies as necessary (Approx. $65). New students do not need art background to enjoy this exciting art form. Items to bring from home are listed on the class registration receipt. A complete list of supplies and sources is available from the instructor. Please enroll at least 7 days prior to the class date.     Drawing for Interior Design

    Chinese Calligraphy
    Learn to write Chinese characters. Brush techniques, stroke order and different styles of writing (i.e., experimental and "throw" ink) will be presented. Every student receives a work booklet to take home. Supplies (approximately $40) are available from the instructor, but please contact the instructor (dougjoy@ocsnet.net or 559-539-6123) if you plan on bringing your own ink and brushes. Bring a sack lunch.

    Supply list:
    orchid/bamboo brush, size medium or large;
    felt 24x24 minimum, but 24x36 recommended;
    bottle Chinese ink;
    roll of practice paper;
    wide mouth water container to wash brushes and a saucer for ink.
