ART

Art Exploration (Grades 5/6 & 7/9)  - (1 hr)
Instructor: Margaret Archuleta
Room 4710 (Sessions I & II, 9:30-10:20am & 10:30-11:20am)

Learn important visual techniques and drawing “tricks” while exploring a variety of media, including painting and various art materials. Develop artistic talent through a variety of assignments that include shading, color and perspective. This hands-on course is fun, creative and a little challenging but can get messy, so please dress appropriately.
Fee: $70 + $5 materials fee = $75

Color, Design & Painting Intro (Grades 5/6 & 7/9)  - (1 hr)

This class provides an introduction to composition, color and acrylic painting. Explore basic design concepts, color theory and painting techniques through a variety of subjects from imagination as well as from life. Students will be exposed to a wide variety of artists and ideas from different time periods. All skill levels welcome.

Drawing from Life (Grades 5/6 & 7/9)  - (1 hr)

This class introduces the basic materials and techniques of drawing. Students will learn how to draw what they see. Subject matter will include both three-dimensional objects (still-lifes) and photographs. The basic visual elements of line, shape, value, texture and color will be explored through pencil, charcoal, pen and ink wash. In addition, students will learn about positive and negative space, proportion, perspective and light logic. These elements will be presented in an art-historical context with emphasis on learning how to use a variety of materials and techniques.

COMPUTERS

Digital Imaging (Grades 5/9)  -  (1 hr)

Room 4740 (Sessions I & II, 10:30-11:20am)

Class covers digital cameras, scanners and camcorders. Students will learn how to manipulate and edit photos using PhotoShop, Word, and Microsoft Publisher. Office 2003 (Grades 5/9)  - (1 hr)

Learn different aspects of the Office Professional package using Word, PowerPoint, and MS Publisher. This fun class will give students the preparative edge through the creation of  brochures, greeting cards, calendars and documents. They will complete a PowerPoint presentation to show to family and friends.

Web Page Design (Grades 5/9)  - (2 hrs)
Instructor: Heather Burchmore

Students will design their own Web page using MS Word and Dream Weaver MX. They will learn how to insert graphics, create banners and links to their favorite sites.
Suggestion:
Take Digital Imaging simultaneously with Web Page Design.

COOKING & NUTRITION

Cake Decorating (Grades 5/9)  - (1 hr)
Instructor: Karen Poland

This class is for people who want to learn how to make frosting and then make flowers, stars and fancy writing. Class includes decorating cakes, cookies and cupcakes.

Cooking Fundamentals (Grades 5/9)  -  (2 hrs)

This "hands-on" class is an introduction to baking basic breads, preparing simple after school snacks and delicious desserts. Dress appropriately for cooking projects or send apron, t-shirt, etc to cover clothes.

Nutrition (Grades 5/6 & 7/9)  - (1 hr)

Good nutrition habits can offset the national trend of 1 in 3 children are obese. This class has good and healthy eats and treats that taste good and are good for you. Students taste new creations and enjoy the flavor of food. Includes food preparation, health value of ingredients, sharing of recipes and dishes, as well as guest presentations by local chefs.

FASHION

Fashion Design Camp (Grades 5/6 & 5/9)  - (2 hrs)

Come to our creative design camp! Learn to make a unique tote bag to take to the beach, or anywhere you like to go for summer fun! Bring an old pair of denims; we will supply the rest! Model your creation at our closing day fashion show.

Interior Design Camp (Grades 5/6 & 7/9)  - (2 hrs)

Need new accessories to “jazz” up your room? Create a fabulous throw pillow with fabrics, trims, and paints. Design a fun, fabric covered frame to hold all you favorite pictures. Bring one yard of fabric that you like; we’ll supply the rest! Great class for future interior designers.
Fee: $145 + $5 materials fee = $150

HOME ROOM

Home Room (Grades 5/9)  - (1 hr or 2.5 hrs)

Room 4710 (Sessions I & II, 7:30-8:20am or 3-5:30pm)

These Home Room classes are available for parents who need to drop their children off before 8:30am or pick them up after 3pm. In a structured, supervised environment, students can read books, do crafts, play games or cards, watch movies, do homework, or just hang out with friends. Pay by the semester or by the hour.
Fee: $25 Morning per Session; $75 Evening per Session; or $3 per hour

LANGUAGES

American Sign Language I (Grades 5/9 & 7/9)  - (1 hr)

American Sign Language (ASL) is the third most-used language in the United States. In this class students will learn basic conversational vocabulary and grammar (i.e. asking and answering questions), as well as finger spelling and numbers. Students will learn about the Deaf Community, play games and establish a foundation to continue building on these newly learned skills.

Cuesta CFK Glee Club (Grades 5/9)  - (1 hr)

The CFK Glee Club will provide students with an opportunity to learn good fundamental vocal skills and basic musicianship…while having a great time! The class will focus on preparing a short musical presentation for parents to see when the session concludes. The presentation will include singing, choreography and some drama. Parents, you will be amazed to see what students can learn in such a short time!

PHYSICAL ED ACTIVITIES (Coed)

Intro to Karate (Grades 5/9)  - (1 hr)

Learn the fundamentals of karate in this introduction to the traditional Japanese system of Koei-Kan Karate-Do. Students will learn basic blocks, punches, and kicks; discover grace in movement by learning simple kata, or forms; and will develop conditioning and coordination while practicing these techniques. The class will also devote time to self-defense skills, and will include a weapons and throwing demonstration.
A class uniform (keikogi) is optional and can be purchased from the instructor on the first day of class for $20.

Non-Traditional Games & Field Sports (Grades 5/9)  - (1 hr)

Students will focus on cooperative games that provide an alternative and exciting experience from traditional sports. Many activities will focus on communication, cooperation, team building, trust and group challenges. Students must be willing to break from tradition, expand their limits and try new things.

Soccer (Grades 5/9)  - (1 hr)

Students will focus on basic skill development, strategies, game rules, positions and fun cooperative activities. Shin guards are required.

Swim Fitness (Grades 5/9)  - (1 hr)

Deep End of the Pool (Sessions I & II, 1-1:50pm & 2-2:50pm)
 Experience new and fun ways to exercise in the pool. Guided techniques of aqua aerobics designed to increase conditioning will be provided in the one or two hour class. Youth participating in this activity must be a level 4 swimmer or above and confident in deep water. Children can sign up for more than one class. This class meets in the deep end of the main pool. Pool Closures are possible. Although we try to avoid this, because of the tight schedule, make-ups are not possible. Your class fee reflects this possibility. No refunds for pool closures

Track & Field (Grades 5/9)  - (1 hr)

Run the super mile. Sprint the 40 yard dash. Long jump into a sand pit and softball throw your farthest. Students will develop their athletic ability in a variety of track and field events while also testing their natural talents. Join this modern and exiting class intended to help build cooperation and critical thinking skills while also creating a healthy forum for fun competition.

Volleyball (Grades 5/9)  - (1 hr)

This outdoor class is provided on sand courts. Instruction includes basic skill development, strategies, game rules and fun cooperative activities.

READING, WRITING & THINKING (PHILOSOPHY)

Argument 101.5 (Grades 6/9)  - (1 hr)

This class is for previous Argument 101 attendees and for first timers who are in want to learn how to argue with parents and/or other authority figures in their lives without the risks of grounding, being sent to one's room, etc. Bring your top issues to be resolved and we will work on acquiring some real, practical, and logical negotiating skills. Tons of fun if previous years' attendees are to be believed!

Creative Writing (Grades 5/9)  - (1 hr)

Students will enjoy creating, improving and sharing many story line ideas and forums. This creative and imaginative writing course will emphasize correct grammar and techniques for devising story line and plot development. The class concentrates on developing the student's creative outlet through correct sentence structure and a weekly short story.

Harry Potter Free-for-All (Grades 5/9)  - (1 hr)

This is the 10th Anniversary class for our Potter fans!" If you have read the books and are looking forward to the next movie(s), and if you are pretty sure that you know all there is to know, then this class is for you! The most die-hard fans will enjoy, be entertained by, and discover new elements to the beloved Harry Potter series. Rick Riordan may tell a good story but Percy Jackson is no Harry Potter and we'll talk about THAT, too. To truly get the most from this class, students are encouraged strongly to read the books--at least three or four--before the class. Not required but suggested.

It's Showtime (Grades 5/9)  - (1 hr)

Creating a critical eye for film makes going to the movies an exciting, educational experience. Students will learn what makes the story work, how contrasts are used to keep the audience interested and how feelings are manipulated. Students will learn about the world around us through appropriate classic and contemporary films.
Films to be reviewed: The Bridge to Terabithia (PG), Duma (PG), Whale Rider (PG-13), The Black Stallion (G), To Kill a Mocking Bird (NR), Rabbit-Proof Fence (PG), and Into the West (NR). Print or View Flyer with Movie Descriptions.

Mr. Tolkien & Mr. Lewis (7/9)  - (1 hr)

How a World War and a deep friendship contributed to the amazing stories of MiddleEarth and Narnia. This class is for those students who have read The Lord of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia--or have at least listened to the audio books (parental reading counts, too). Students who have experienced AnnE's Harry Potter classes would enjoy this new offering.

SCIENCE & MATH

Astrology & Mythology (Grades 5/9)  - (1 hr)

In this class students will learn our solar system and beyond in week 1; study Native American Constellations and mythology with a focus on stories of our local tribe-the Chumash in week 2; and, finish with Greek Constellations and mythology.

Exploring Life on Planet Earth (Grades 5/9)  - (1 hr)

Around the world in three weeks!  Students will learn about marine mammals, fish, kelp, and squid dissections in week 1; study native animals to the Central Coast such as birds, reptiles, amphibians and insects in week 2; and, finish in the last week exploring soil, geology, soil science and communities.

SHOP

Basic Woodworking I (Grades 5/9)  - (2 hrs)
Instructor: Helen Zanoli
Room 4201 (Sessions I & II, 8:30-10:20am & 10:30am-12:20pm)

This class will present the application of power and hand tools to the mills and cabinet trade and is designed to accommodate all levels of experience. Students will also examine types of woods, deal with methods of fastening, types of joints and will emphasize general power tools such as table saw, sander, chop saw and planer. Safety is taught and re-emphasized daily and techniques will be developed so safety becomes second nature.

Basic Woodworking II (Grades 5/9)  - (2 hrs)

This class allows students who have taken Basic Woodworking I more time using power and hand tools to the mills and cabinet trade while making different projects. Safety will continue to be taught and re-emphasized daily and techniques will be developed so safety becomes second nature

Welding (Grades 7/9)  - (2 hrs) Room 4209

Weld steel with an electric arc that is 10,000 degrees hot! This class provides students with an opportunity to practice and develop skills in short arc welding of sheet steels. Topics include safety, physics of welding and metalworking. Personal safety glasses, welding gloves and supplies included. Dress code for safety: long pants (can change at shop), long sleeve shirt and enclosed shoes (tennis shoes OK - no sandals).

Welding, Advanced (7/9)  - (2 hrs)

Pick up where you left off in welding and explore more welding processes. Explore stick welding and oxy-fuel processes. Design and build a windmill using your creativity with sheet metal and plate steel. Mandatory attendance first day of class due to safety issues. Dress code for safety: long pants (can change at shop), long sleeve shirt, and enclosed shoes (tennis shoes OK - no sandals). **Prerequisite: Welding.
