HOME ROOM

These Home Room classes are available for parents who need to drop their children off before 8:30am or pick them up after 3pm. Before or after College for Kids, students can read books, do crafts, play games or cards, watch movies, do homework, or just hang out with friends... in a structured, supervised environment.  
Pay by the 3 week session or by the hour.

Fee: $25 Morning per session; $75 Evening per session; or $3 per hour

ARTS & CRAFTS

Be a Heroic Author/Illustrator!
Storytelling Using Words & Pictures
(Grades 5/9) - (1 hr)

Do you love Captain Underpants? Spiderman? Sponge Bob? The Powerpuff Girls? Develop your own heroes and tell their stories with words and pictures! In this workshop you will learn everything you need to know to write and illustrate the world’s best comic or storybook about a character you invent! Each participant will develop a short publication that tells a story integrating graphics and text. Individual workshop sessions will include analyses of various examples of storytelling using words and pictures, character development, illustration tools and techniques, developing the story, and, of course writing and illustrating. At the end of the course, each student will have a book he/she has created.

Cartooning Intro (Grades 5/9) - (1 hr)

This class is a fun way of inspiring and motivating students in their love of cartoons and drawing.  Students will learn how to create their own cartoon characters, working in a humorous “Sunday funnies” style, even if they’ve never drawn before. Students will learn warm-up and imagination exercises, as well as be able to draw humorous, simplified faces and figures, cartoon animals, and more. Claymation Studio (Grades 5/9) - (2 hrs)

Have you ever watched claymation films, such as “Chicken Run” or “Wallace and Gromit?” This is an animation class where students explore claymation through learning to storyboard, building characters and sets, and working as a team to create a film that will be put on DVD and mailed to each student. Students will have the option to bring their creations as well. Fabric Painting & Collage (Grades 5/9) - (1 hr)

Combine your interests in sewing, collage, and painting as we create images from nature and imagination. You choose how much of each art form to emphasize in your 2-D wall hanging, backpack or clothing patch, even a section of an old pair of jeans! We will review the basics of hand stitch and applique, layering fabrics and paint to create colorful and highly textured patterns and images.

Hand-Built 3D Sculpture (Grades 5/9) - (1 hr)

Craft your own invention or make a piece of non-representational art. We will make two or more 3-D sculptures using wood, metal, card board, wire etc., so both are possible. Work with your hands and imagination to combine unlikely items while learning about the principles of balance, repetition and unity.

Model Making & Poster Design (Grades 5/9) - (1 hr)

Design and build three-dimensional models. Students will learn to work with a variety of media to create and build models and maps. In addition, they will learn how to copy and enlarge maps and pictures by hand, and design and make visually interesting posters. We will happily accept contributions of newspaper, magazines, and Styrofoam to be used in model making. Note: While students are stretching their imaginations they are making connections between their new skills and making school projects from scratch.

Career Exploration (Grades 5/9) - (1 hr)

Cops, Crimes & Court (Grades 5/9)  - (1 hr)

Students will explore the exciting world of law enforcement and learn about their relationship with our legal system. Students will learn about the laws related to their safety: safety outdoors, stranger danger, internet safety, cyber bullying, school violence, safe driving and home security. Other topics included are the criminal justice system; police field operations; community policing and relations; search, seizure and arrest practices; investigations; and the use and meaning of laws, statutes, rules and regulations in law enforcement.

Kids in Business - Entrepreneurship (Grades 5/9) - (1 hr)

Many kids today are starting their own businesses. These businesses range from providing services such as pet sitting and computer repairs, to selling products. But, what does it really take to start and operate a business? In this class you will study successful young entrepreneurs and learn the basics of how to start your own business. You will be introduced to how business ideas are created, where the money comes from to start a business, what legal issues may need to be considered, the contents of a business plan, and how to operate a business. Everyone will have fun learning about entrepreneurship through class activities and games.

Super Sitter (Grades 5/9) - (1 hr)

Looking for a way to make some money doing something you enjoy?  Students will learn safety and responsibilities of a sitter. Information covered includes; how to interview for a job, what parents expect, how to handle an emergency or illness, how to prevent accidents, how to play with different age children, how to select safe toys and games, how to diaper and dress infants, how to feed babies and prepare simple food for children, how to perform first aid and tips on current pay.

COMPUTERS

Beg Digital Photography (Grades 5/9) - (1 hr)

The focus of this fun, lively and interactive class is to inspire creativity in picture-taking while learning some great tips on how to help the students’ pictures stand out from all the rest. Students will learn to confidently use their cameras so they can impress family and friends. NOTE: Students are required to bring their own digital camera with instruction manual to class. Although a camera capable of manual control is strongly advised, a general purpose point and shoot camera will suffice. Experience Level: Students need to have a basic understanding of their camera.

Digital Imaging (Grades 5/9) - (1 hr)
Instructor: Raquel Meinke

Class covers digital cameras, scanners and camcorders. Students will learn how to manipulate and edit photos using PhotoShop, Word, and Microsoft Publisher. Bring in photos from home to enlarge or make smaller using the scanner. Make a personal photo album upon completion of class.

PowerPoint Presentations for School (Grades 5/9) - (1 hr)

Learn how to use Microsoft PowerPoint to deliver great presentations for school, friends and family. This a computer software program that is fairly simple to learn, yet serves as an extremely useful tool to help organize your thoughts and make public speaking a bit less stressful (honest). In this class you will learn how to create eye-catching visual presentations using written text, photos, slide transitions, sounds, and animations. Plus, you will have the opportunity to present one of your creations during "The PowerPoint Extravaganza." At the conclusion of this class you will take-home a USB drive with your PowerPoint creations. No previous experience with Microsoft PowerPoint is necessary.

Web Page Design (Grades 5/9) - (2 hrs)

Students will design their own Web page using MS Word and Dream Weaver MX. They will learn how to insert graphics, create banners and links to their favorite sites. Recommended: Take Digital Imaging simultaneously with Web Page Design.

Bake & Decorate  (Grades 5/9) - (2 hrs)

What fun…learn how to bake and then decorate cakes, cookies and cupcakes for family, friends, and special celebrations. Students will learn how to make frosting and then make flowers, stars and fancy writing to personalize their baked goods to become their own “CakeBoss”. Class will include an opportunity to sell their baked goods.

Fun, Food & Fitness (Grades 5/9) - (1 hr)

Hands–on activities, experiments and discussion are used to educate students about healthy food choices, cultural lifestyles, and fitness. Stir up some cooking fun with our "Cooking Around the World". You won't have to pack your bags to experience a summer cooking adventure. Learn about different cultures and fun food facts from around the world while cooking recipes using seasonal, local produce. After this course, you'll be able to surprise Mom and Dad with their favorite international dish! Children learn about the function and care of the digestive and circulatory systems, understanding the importance of healthy food choices and fitness as they relate to the overall health of the body. Food items, equipment and cookbook included. NOTE: New recipes will be introduced-so students who enjoyed this class last year might want to consider this class again.

International Cuisine: Food Around the World

Students will learn words and phrases by hearing and reading the French language to help them speak with confidence with friends and family. The teacher will utilize an input-based storytelling approach with many questions asked to insure comprehension.  French culture, geography, history and cuisine will all be included.

Beginning Italian  (Grades 5/9) - (1 hr)

Learn practical words and phrases useful for a trip to Italy and as a basis for further study of Italian. Italian culture, geography, history and cuisine will be explored.

Beginning Spanish (Grades 5/9) - (1 hr)

Students will embark on a journey across countries and cultures as they learn Spanish words and phrases within the context of different cultures! Students will have the chance to engage in role-playing, create skits, play games, tell stories, and taste foods from Spanish speaking countries. Students will gain confidence in their Spanish skills as they practice speaking in a fun and safe environment. No prior experience with Spanish is necessary, but students who have some Spanish background are also welcome. Each student will be challenged based on their personal ability level.

What is France famous for? Famous places and people of France is just a small part of what student will be introduced to. Also included will be the customs, traditions, fashion, cuisine, and music of France. Having some knowledge of the French language will be helpful but not mandatory.

Clowning Around (Grades 5/6 & 7/9) - (1 hr)

Students will learn how to develop their own inner clown while exploring a variety of entertainment activities, and funny bits used for performance. Learning to twist balloon animals, face painting, work with puppets, and create your own clown character will be included.

Drumming 101 (Grades 5/6 & 7/9) - (1 hr)

Students will enjoy learning the basics of how to play drums in this beginning level drum class. Focus of the class will be having fun while learning proper techniques and drum fundamentals. Students will also be introduced to various percussion instruments, their function and how they are played played.

Glee Club...Live! (Grades 5/9) - (2 hrs)

The CFK Glee Club will provide students with an opportunity to learn good fundamental vocal skills and basic musicianship…while having a great time! The class will focus on preparing a short musical presentation for parents to see when the session concludes. The presentation will include singing, choreography and some drama. Parents, you will be amazed to see what students can learn in such a short time!

History of Rock 'N Roll...& Birth of Pop Culture (Grades 5/9) - (1 hr) Instructor: Kris Doe

Improv Comedy for Kids  (Grades 5/9) - (1 hr)

This class is designed to build confidence, enhance listening skills, promote teamwork and provide a wonderful outlet for creativity and freedom of play. Constructive coaching, warm-up exercises, creative performance games and short form improvisation scene work will be the focus. The popular TV show "Whose Line is it Anyway" is a great example of short form improv at its finest.

Fencing for Kids (Grades 5/9) - (1 hr)

Class will include the basic skills in fencing including body position, footwork, attacks, right of way, and parries (defenses). The class will teach fencing as a safe sport and all students will wear the standard protective gear when fencing.

Non-Traditional Games & Field Sports (Grades 5/9) - (1 hr)

Students will focus on cooperative games that provide an alternative and exciting experience from traditional sports. Many activities will focus on communication, cooperation, team building, trust, teamwork and group challenges. Students must be willing to break from tradition, expand their limits and try new things.

Softball players of all levels will have fun and benefit from taking this class. Students will learn basic skill development, strategies, game rules and fun workout drill.

Swim Fitness (Grades 5/9) - (1 hr)

Deep End of the Pool (Sessions I & II, 1-1:50pm & 2-2:50pm)
 Experience new and fun ways to exercise in the pool. Guided techniques of aqua aerobics designed to increase conditioning will be provided in the one or two hour class. Youth participating in this activity must be a level 4 swimmer or above and confident in deep water. Must be able to swim the length of the large pool demonstrating front crawl with side breathing. Children can sign up for more than one class. This class meets in the deep end of the main pool. Pool Closures are possible. Although we try to avoid this, because of the tight schedule, make-ups are not possible. Your class fee reflects this possibility. No refunds for pool closures

Tennis Skills (Grades 5/9) - (1 hr)

No matter what level of skill you’re at, you’ll learn something new in this class. Enjoy fun drills that cover footwork, forehands, backhands, volleys, overheads, serves and court awareness. NOTE: Students need to bring their own racket and must wear non-marking soled tennis shoes and are advised to bring a water bottle, sunscreen and a hat or visor.

Argument 101 (Grades 6/9) - (1 hr)

Students in this enlightening and entertaining class learn to gather their thoughts and facts before arguing or "debating" every little matter with parents or other authority figures. Being prepared helps resolve issues by acquiring some real, practical and logical negotiating skills without the risks of grounding, being sent to one's room, etc. Active listening skills and real time practice included.

Creative Writing (Grades 5/9) - (1 hr)

Students will jump into creative expression as they learn how to write short stories, poetry, and drama. An emphasis will be placed on descriptive language, character development, and grammar conventions as students learn techniques for improving the quality of their written work. Students will have the opportunity to share their writing with their classmates, and will create one fully revised written piece each week. All ability levels are welcome!

Hogwarts, Olympians, Titans & More (Grades 5/9)  - (1 hr)

This class invites students to journey more deeply into Harry's Story--every year since Summer of 2000, students have enjoyed discovering just how much of value J.K. Rowling buried in her series for readers to discover. Geared toward those who have read the Harry Potter series, even non-readers who have all the movies (more than once) are able to engage in lively and fascinating conversations about Classical Mythology (Greek AND Roman), Philosophy, Latin root words of importance, etc. For the first time this year we shall also be looking at and considering other popular books and series including (but not limited to) Rick Riordan's series and others. As a bonus, literary and cinematic critiquing and literacy are employed in this class.

Magazine Publisher (Grades 5/9)  - (1 hr)

Students will plan, develop, write, photograph, illustrate, and put together magazines. Students may work in groups or as individuals deciding genre and format of their magazines, fix the timeline and schedules, create the content, plan and produce the illustrations/photos, and put it all together. Class sessions may include mini-lessons on story construction, brainstorming, writing techniques, revision and editing, and writing in groups. At the end of the course, each student will have a copy of a magazine he/she has created.

Thrill Writing! Adventure, Horror & Mystery Writing
Instructor: Barbara Hoffman  (Grades 5/9)  - (1 hr)

Learn to thrill, mystify, and scare your readers just like your favorite authors do! Grab your readers’ attention with your very first words and inspire them to keep turning the pages to find out what happens next! Students will explore the elements of writing by writing their own adventure, horror, and mystery tales. They may write in a variety of genres including short stories, plays, poetry, chapter books, even novels. Daily sessions may include mini-lessons on story construction, brainstorming, writing techniques, revision and editing, and uninterrupted writing time. Peer editing and instructor editing will both be applied. The process of writing is the focus of the class – not the mechanics of writing. The culmination of the class will be the publication of collected work in a literary magazine that the students will title, illustrate, and bind themselves.

SCIENCE

Astronomy & Mythology (Grades 5/9) - (1 hr)

In this class students will learn our solar system and beyond in week 1; study Native  American Constellations and mythology with a focus on stories of our local tribe-the Chumash in week 2; and, finish with Greek Constellations and mythology.

Exploring Life on Planet Earth (Grades 5/9) - (1 hr)

Around the world in three weeks!  Students will learn about marine mammals, fish, kelp, and squid dissections in week 1; study native animals to the Central Coast such as birds, reptiles, amphibians and insects in week 2; and, finish in the last week exploring soil, geology, soil science and communities.

This course provides hands-on skills for the gardener/agriculturist, while exploring the physical, scientific, artistic, and cultural dimensions of gardening. The culture of vegetables and culinary Herbs is introduced in this course; both organic and inorganic ways of growing produce are presented with a hands-on experience. Crops are presented from seedlings and transplants to pest control and harvesting. Weekly fieldwork will be supplemented with garden food demonstrations for enjoyment of gardening and the outdoors.

Green Sustainability for Kids (Grades 5/9) - (1 hr)

Don't think for a minute that sustainability can't be fun and inventive all year round! We'll share ideas, eat food cooked in a solar oven, work to build one, and plan your future together. We can even cook in our cars! Projects include seed bombs with discussion of guerilla gardening, attractive re-usable gift wrap, brainstorm sessions for wind and solar power, and time in nature.

Rockhounding (Grades 5/9) - (1 hr)

Have you wanted to find out about geology, rocks and fossils? This class will examine the formation of the geological features, rocks, minerals and fossils unique to this area. Learn rock identification, fossil types and lapidary techniques for enhancing the beauty of rocks and minerals. The hands-on lab will include making a rock collection, fossil cleaning and rock polishing. Co-sponsored by the Santa Lucia Rockhounds.

Basic Woodworking I (Grades 5/9) - (2 hrs)

This class will present the application of power and hand tools to the mills and cabinet trade and is designed to accommodate all levels of experience. Students will also examine types of woods, deal with methods of fastening, types of joints and will emphasize general power tools such as table saw, sander, chop saw and planer. Safety is taught and re-emphasized daily and techniques will be developed so safety becomes second nature.

Basic Woodworking II (Grades 5/9) - (2 hrs)

This class allows students who have taken Basic Woodworking I more time using power and hand tools to the mills and cabinet trade while making different projects. Safety will continue to be taught and re-emphasized daily and techniques will be developed so safety becomes second nature

Welding (Grades 7/9) - (2 hrs)

Weld steel with an electric arc that is 10,000 degrees hot! This class provides students with an opportunity to practice and develop skills in short arc welding of sheet steels. Topics include safety, physics of welding and metalworking. Personal safety glasses, welding gloves and supplies included. Dress code for safety: long pants (can change at shop), long sleeve shirt and enclosed shoes (tennis shoes OK - no sandals).
Mandatory attendance
first day of class due to safety issues.
