ART

Art Exploration (Grades 5/6 & 7/9) Margaret Archuleta - (1 hr)

Learn important visual techniques and drawing “tricks” while exploring a variety of media, including painting and various art materials. Develop artistic talent through a variety of assignments that include shading, color and perspective. This hands-on course is fun, creative and a little challenging but can get messy, so please dress appropriately.
Fee: $70 + $5 materials fee = $75

Color, Design & Painting (Grades 5/6 & 7/9) Adrienne Allebe - (1 hr)

This class provides an introduction to composition, color and acrylic painting. Explore basic design concepts, color theory and painting techniques through a variety of subjects from imagination as well as from life. Students will be exposed to a wide variety of artists and ideas from different time periods. All skill levels welcome.

Jewelry Arts (Grades 5/9) Anne O'Brien - (1 hr)

Introduction to jewelry arts for kids. Learn metal-smithing techniques to make hand forged earrings and bracelets, wire wrap instruction for necklaces and earrings, and acid etching project for pendants or earrings.

Journey of Pen & Ink (Grades 5/6 & 7/9) Madeline Simonaro - (1 hr)

This class will explore the many styles of pen and ink, as well as, the changing creation of line, style and composition. Look into the path pen and ink has taken through the centuries. Look at formal and unique perspectives, through realism and modern art.

Learn the proportions of the face and create all kinds of portraits. We’ll make faces out of pencil, crayon, chalk pastels, oil pastels, collage papers, and felt tip pens.

COMPUTERS

Digital Imaging (Grades 5/9) Heather Burchmore -  (1 hr)

Class covers digital cameras, scanners and camcorders. Students will learn how to manipulate and edit photos using PhotoShop, Word, and Microsoft Publisher. Office 2003 (Grades 5/9) Heather Burchmore - (1 hr)

Learn different aspects of the Office Professional package using Word, PowerPoint, and MS Publisher. This fun class will give students the preparative edge through the creation of  brochures, greeting cards, calendars and documents. They will complete a PowerPoint presentation to show to family and friends.

Web Page Design (Grades 5/9) Heather Burchmore - (2 hrs)

Students will design their own Web page using MS Word and Dream Weaver MX. They will learn how to insert graphics, create banners and links to their favorite sites.
Suggestion:
Take Digital Imaging simultaneously with Web Page Design.

Fashion Design is better than ever! New this summer; t-shirts and denim designs! Create a unique new look with fabric, trims and paint. Express yourself in the fun and fast paced world of fashion, using your own “re-cycled” jeans and tees! Finish the session with a fabulous fashion show and design presentation.
Bring a plain white t-shirt and an old pair of jeans to the first class meeting to design.

Explore the fabulous world of Interior Design! Learn to draw furniture and accessories for your own “fantasy bedroom”. Use materials from designer fabrics, wallpaper, and paint books to express yourself. Create a matching bulletin board to go with your new look!

Attention all Interior Designers! Need new accessories to “jazz” up your room? Create a fabulous throw pillow with fabrics, trims, and paints. Design a fun, fabric covered frame to hold all you favorite pictures. Bring one yard of fabric that you like; we’ll supply the rest!

HOME ROOM

Home Room (Grades 5/9) Kandace Carmichael - (1 hr or 2.5 hrs)

These Home Room classes are available for parents who need to drop their children off before 8:30am or pick them up after 3pm. In a structured, supervised environment, students can read books, do crafts, play games or cards, watch movies, do homework, or just hang out with friends. Pay by the semester or by the hour.
Fee: $25 Morning per Session; $75 Evening per Session; or $3 per hour

Learn about different ways to enjoy and understand music, exploring styles from the symphony orchestra to American Folk music and rock n’ roll. Sing songs by Bob Marley, The Beatles, Woody Guthrie and more. Learn basics of rhythm with classroom drumming. All levels welcome, no prior experience necessary.

Intro to Karate (Grades 5/9) Larry Rhodes - (1 hr) CANCELED

Learn the fundamentals of karate in this introduction to the traditional Japanese system of Koei-Kan Karate-Do. Students will learn basic blocks, punches, and kicks; discover grace in movement by learning simple kata, or forms; and will develop conditioning and coordination while practicing these techniques. The class will also devote time to self-defense skills, and will include a weapons and throwing demonstration.
A class uniform (keikogi) is optional and can be purchased from the instructor on the first day of class for $20.

Students will focus on cooperative games that provide an alternative and exciting experience from traditional sports. Many activities will focus on communication, cooperation, team building, trust and group challenges. Students must be willing to break from tradition, expand their limits and try new things.

Deep End of the Pool (Sessions I & II, 1-1:50pm & 2-2:50pm)
 Experience new and fun ways to exercise in the pool. Guided techniques of aqua aerobics designed to increase conditioning will be provided in the one or two hour class. Youth participating in this activity must be a level 4 swimmer or above and confident in deep water. Children can sign up for more than one class. This class meets in the deep end of the main pool. Pool Closures are possible. Although we try to avoid this, because of the tight schedule, make-ups are not possible. Your class fee reflects this possibility. No refunds for pool closures

Below the surface of this series lay countless treasures buried by Harry’s creator, J.K. Rowling. Come explore the mysteries and surprises hidden in each of the seven books. Join in lively discussions about Harry’s fate and whether or not Sirius and Dumbledore are somehow coming back. Reconsider the roles of myth and language in literature, Philosophy and our culture.

The foundations of effective arguing are rooted in the lives and beliefs of a bunch of old characters like Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. Come meet some of the greatest thinkers of the Ancient World and practice some new thinking techniques that just might help you win some arguments without getting grounded and without annoying your friends, family and acquaintances. This popular course offers you the opportunity to “test drive” some great speaking and debate skills in a relaxed and guaranteed fun environment.

Classical Clues in Harry Potter (Grades 5/8) AnnE Lorenzen - (1 hr)

Plan on learning more than you can imagine about what is going on in the Potter series, and in Harry’s life. For seven summers, students of this course have been amazed and enthused by discovering the fun (yeah, fun!) in classical Latin, mythology, and the astounding of adults. Although a working familiarity with the story line is helpful, the reading of the books is not a prerequisite for this course. (And, yes: having seen the movies does count.)

Students will enjoy creating, improving and sharing many story line ideas and forums. This creative and imaginative writing course will emphasize correct grammar and techniques for devising story line and plot development. The class concentrates on developing the student's creative outlet through correct sentence structure and a weekly short story.

Creating a critical eye for film makes going to the movies an exciting, educational experience. Learn what makes the story work, how contrasts are used to keep us interested and how feelings are manipulated. Learn about the world around us through appropriate classic and contemporary films.
Films to be reviewed are Duma (NR), Whale Rider (NR), Black Stallion (NR), To Kill a Mockingbird (NR), Rabbit Proof Fence (PG), and Into the West (PG).

Exploring Life on Planet Earth (Grades 5/9) Karen Poland - (1 hr)

Around the world in 3 weeks! Week 1: Students will learn about marine mammals, fish, kelp and squid dissections. Week 2: Study native animals to the Central Coast such as birds, reptiles, amphibians and insects. Week 3: Explore soil, geology, soil science and communities.

Finance for Kids (Grades 5/9) Susan Goya - (1 hr)

How can you turn a Coke a day into a car for high school graduation? How do you budget your allowance? Are the kids with i-phones rich? How can you recognize bogus advertising claims? We will explore all of these questions and more in an interactive, simulation format.

SHOP

Beginning Woodworking (Grades 5/9) Helen Zanoli - (2 hrs)

Presents the application of power and hand tools to the mills and cabinet trade. Examines types of wood, both hard and soft. Deals with methods of fastening and types of joints. Emphasizes general power tools such as table saw, sander, chop saw and planer. This class is designed for the beginner, but any skill level can be accommodated. Safety is taught and re-emphasized daily. Techniques will be developed so that safety becomes second nature.

Welding (Grades 7/9) Rob Thoresen - (2 hrs) Room 4209

Weld steel with an electric arc that is 10,000 degrees hot! This class provides students with an opportunity to practice and develop skills in short arc welding of sheet steels. Topics include safety, physics of welding and metalworking. Personal safety glasses, welding gloves and supplies included. Dress code for safety: long pants (can change at shop), long sleeve shirt and enclosed shoes (tennis shoes OK - no sandals).

Welding, Advanced (7/9) Rob Thoresen - (2 hrs)

Pick up where you left off in welding and explore more welding processes. Explore stick welding and oxy-fuel processes. Design and build a windmill using your creativity with sheet metal and plate steel. Mandatory attendance first day of class due to safety issues. Dress code for safety: long pants (can change at shop), long sleeve shirt, and enclosed shoes (tennis shoes OK - no sandals). **Prerequisite: Welding.
