About Faces (7/8/9) Joan Judson - Rm 4720 (Session I only)
Learn about the proportions of the face using pencils, chalks, oil pastels and collage techniques to create a variety of different portraits.
Fee: $70 + $5 materials fee = $75

Art & Letters (7/8/9) Joan Judson - Rm 4720 (Session I only)
Create works of art using letters. Learn to do calligraphy (lettering). Make an illuminated letter, and create letter prints and cards using printmaking methods.
Fee: $70 + $5 materials fee = $75

Art Exploration (5/6 & 7/8/9) Margaret Archuleta - Rm 4750 (Sessions I & II)
Learn important visual techniques and drawing “tricks” while exploring a variety of media, including painting and various art materials. Develop artistic talent through a variety of assignments that include shading, color and perspective. This hands-on course is fun, creative and a little challenging but can get messy, so please dress appropriately.

Cartooning (7/8/9) Margaret Archuleta - Rm 4750 (Sessions I & II)
Explore rendering techniques to create a cartoon character, to show your characters in motion, and to duplicate your character several times. Learn to create an interesting script and plotline for your cartoon character. We will also make several renderings of different cartoon characters, step-by-step, to use to make your own favorite cartoon characters. Sketching techniques to quickly develop a drawing, both main character and background, will be taught and applied.

Color, Design & Painting, Intro (5/6 & 7/8/9) Adrienne Allebe -
Rm 4720 (Sessions I & II)

This class provides an introduction to composition, color and acrylic painting. Explore basic design concepts, color theory and painting techniques through a variety of subjects from imagination as well as from life. Students will be exposed to a wide variety of artists and ideas from different time periods. All skill levels welcome.

Drawing from Life (5/9) Adrienne Allebe - Rm 4021 - Children's Center (Sessions I & II)
This class introduces the basic materials and techniques of drawing. Students will learn how to see and translate their observations to drawing. Subject matter will include both three-dimensional objects (still-life) and photographs. The basic elements of line, shape, value, texture and color will be explored through pencil, charcoal, pen and ink wash.  In addition, students will learn about proportion, positive and negative space, perspective and light logic. These elements will be presented in an art-historical context with emphasis on learning how to use a variety of materials and techniques.

COMPUTERS

Digital Imaging (5/9) Heather Burchmore -  Rm 4740 (Sessions I & II)
Class covers digital cameras, scanners and camcorders. Students will learn how to manipulate and edit photos using PhotoShop, Word, and Microsoft Publisher. Bring in photos from home to enlarge or make smaller using the scanner. Bring in photos from home to enlarge or make smaller using the scanner. Make a personal photo album upon completion of class.

Office 2003 (5/9) Heather Burchmore - Rm 4740 (Sessions I & II)
Learn different aspects of the Office Professional package using Word, PowerPoint, and MS Publisher. This fun class will give students the preparative edge through the creation of  brochures, greeting cards, calendars and documents. They will complete a PowerPoint presentation to show to family and friends.

Web Page Design (5/9) Heather Burchmore - Rm 4740 (Sessions I & II)
Students will design their own Web page using MS Word and Dream Weaver MX. They will learn how to insert graphics, create banners and links to their favorite sites.
Suggestion:
Take Digital Imaging simultaneously with Web Page Design.

An introduction to baking basic breads, preparing simple after school snacks and delicious desserts.

Good eats, healthy treats: taste new creations and enjoy the flavor of food that is good for you. Includes food preparation, health value of ingredients, sharing of recipes and dishes, as well as guest presentations by local chefs.

Interior Design & Decoration (5/9) Rhonda McBride - Rm 4760
(Sessions I & II)

Do you have great ideas for designing your own special space? Once you have the techniques down; it will not be hard to create a fabulous, unique look for your bedroom, bath, or a space just to have fun in! Working with art markers; you will learn to turn cubes into chairs, couches, beds, and bookcases. We will also have fun with actual designer fabric swatches! All of this will enable you to make a fabulous “presentation board” of the room of your dreams.

FASHION DESIGN

Beginning Fashion Design (5/6/7 & 7/8/9) Rhonda McBride - Rm 4760
(Sessions I & II)

Enter the creative world of fashion design and experience the entire design process: from sketching ideas to creating a finished product. Students will start with a plain white t-shirt and learn how to use fabrics, trims, appliqués and even fabric paint! Working in an imaginary design company, students will create ideas for their t-shirts from fashion drawings to the completed design! Bring a plain white t-shirt to the first class meeting.

Fashion Figure Drawing (5/9) Rhonda McBride - Rm 4760
(Sessions I & II)

Learn to draw your high fashion figure using techniques from famous fashion illustrators! We will begin with a standing figure and proceed with several classic poses. We will also learn to draw a fashion face, features and hairstyles. This is a great class for those who are interested in fashion and in improving their drawing skills.

LANGUAGES

Beginning Chinese (5/9) Susan Goya - Rm 4730 (Session II only)

Learn about one of the most fascinating cultures in the world and gain proficiency in basic conversation. Students in this class will learn vocabulary and build communication skills through participation in a variety of lively activities. No previous Chinese required.

Beginning Italian (5/9) Domenico Maceri - Rm 4117 (Session I only)
Learn practical words and phrases useful for a trip to Italy and as a basis for further study of Italian. Italian culture, geography, history and cuisine will be explored.

Beginning Harp (5/9) Jennifer Sayre - Rm 7104 (Session II) Room Change
Students will be introduced to the harp and learn to identify harp strings, note reading and playing songs. No previous experience required. Contact the instructor at jsayre_1@charter.net to arrange for harp rentals starting at $15 per three week session.

PHYSICAL ED ACTIVITIES (Coed)

Basketball (5/9) Erin Bryan - New Gym (Sessions I & II)
Students will learn sound basketball fundamentals, strategies, and game rules in fun cooperative activities. Students must wear appropriate footgear that does not have black soles.

Non-Traditional Games & Field Sports (5/9) Track

Students will focus on cooperative games that provide an alternative and exciting experience from traditional sports. Many activities will focus on communication, cooperation, team building, trust and group challenges. Students must be willing to break from tradition, expand their limits and try new things.

Soccer (5/8) Soccer Field

Students will focus on basic skill development, strategies, game rules, positions and fun cooperative activities. Shin guards are required.

Learn the basic skills of throwing, catching, fielding and hitting. Students will also focus on skill development, rules of the game and teamwork.
Students must provide their own gloves.

Swim Fitness (5/9) Deep End of the Pool
Lindsay Walitsch (Session I) ; Shawn Tucker (Session II)
 
Experience new and fun ways to exercise in the pool. Guided techniques of aqua aerobics designed to increase conditioning will be provided in the one or two hour class. Youth participating in this activity must be a level 4 swimmer or above and confident in deep water. Children can sign up for more than one class. This class meets in the deep end of the main pool. Pool Closures are possible. Although we try to avoid this, because of the tight schedule, make-ups are not possible. Your class fee reflects this possibility. No refunds for pool closures

Volleyball (5/8) Lindsay Walitsch - Sand Volleyball Courts (Session I only)
This outdoor class is provided on sand courts. Instruction includes basic skill development, strategies, game rules and fun cooperative activities.

All About Harry Potter (7/8/9) AnnE Lorenzen - Rm 4118 (Sessions I & II)
Below the surface of this series lay countless treasures buried by Harry’s creator, J.K. Rowling. Come explore the mysteries and surprises hidden in each of the seven books. Join in lively discussions about Harry’s fate and whether or not Sirius and Dumbledore are somehow coming back. Reconsider the roles of myth and language in literature, Philosophy and our culture.

Argument 101 (6/7/8/9) AnnE Lorenzen - Rm 4118 (Sessions I & II)
The foundations of effective arguing are rooted in the lives and beliefs of a bunch of old characters like Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. Come meet some of the greatest thinkers of the Ancient World and practice some new thinking techniques that just might help you win some arguments without getting grounded and without annoying your friends, family and acquaintances. This popular course offers you the opportunity to “test drive” some great speaking and debate skills in a relaxed and guaranteed fun environment.

Classical Clues in Harry Potter (5/8) AnnE Lorenzen - Rm 4118
(Sessions I & II)

Plan on learning more than you can imagine about what is going on in the Potter series, and in Harry’s life. For seven summers, students of this course have been amazed and enthused by discovering the fun (yeah, fun!) in classical Latin, mythology, and the astounding of adults. Although a working familiarity with the story line is helpful, the reading of the books is not a prerequisite for this course. (And, yes: having seen the movies does count.)

Creative Writing (5/6) Margaret Archuleta - Rm 4750 (Sessions I & II)
Students will enjoy creating, improving and sharing many story line ideas and forums. This creative and imaginative writing course will emphasize correct grammar and techniques for devising story line and plot development. The class concentrates on developing the student's creative outlet through correct sentence structure and a weekly short story.

It's Showtime (5/9) Geri Gran - Rm 4021 Children's Center (Sessions I & II)
Creating a critical eye for film makes going to the movies an exciting, educational experience. Learn what makes the story work, how contrasts are used to keep us interested and how feelings are manipulated. Learn about the world around us through appropriate classic and contemporary films.
Films to be reviewed are Duma (NR), Whale Rider (NR), Black Stallion (NR), To Kill a Mockingbird (NR), Rabbit Proof Fence (PG), and Into the West (PG).

SCIENCE & MATH

Astronomy & Mythology (5/9) Karen Poland - Rm 4710 (Sessions I & II)
Learn our solar system and beyond in week 1; study Native American Constellations and mythology with a focus on stories of our local tribe-the Chumash in week 2 and finish with Greek Constellations and mythology.

Exploring Life on Planet Earth (5/8) Karen Poland Rm 4710 
(Sessions I & II)

Around the world in 3 weeks! Week 1: Students will learn about marine mammals, fish, kelp and squid dissections. Week 2: Study native animals to the Central Coast such as birds, reptiles, amphibians and insects. Week 3: Explore soil, geology, soil science and communities. What lies beyond planet Earth?

Fun with Algebra (5/9) - Susan Goya - Rm 4730 (Sessions I & II)
Do you think math hates you? Do you want to win the battle with Algebra and go back to school a better student in Math? Discover why numbers behave the way they do and the usefulness of Algebra in your daily life.

Junior Robotics (5/6) Jeremy Edmonds - (2 hrs) Rm 4502B (Sessions I & II)
Have you ever wanted to build a robot? This course lets you put your hands on real robots and robotic equipment. Learn some basic concepts behind robotic motion and analyze the design of an intelligent robotic insect that will be yours to take home!
Fee: $145 + $20 materials fee = $165

Robotics (7/8/9) Jeremy Edmonds - (2 hrs) Rm 4502B (Sessions I & II)
Have you ever wanted to build a robot? This course lets you put your hands on real robots and robotic equipment. Learn some of the science and physics behind robotic motion and study the technologies of electrical power and computer control programming. Design and build intelligent robots in a team with other classmates and analyze the design of an intelligent robotic insect that will be yours to take home!

Welding (7/8/9) Tim Fay - (2 hrs) Rm 4209 (Sessions I & II)
Weld steel with an electric arc that is 10,000 degrees hot! This class provides students with an opportunity to practice and develop skills in short arc welding of sheet steels. Topics include safety, physics of welding and metalworking. Personal safety glasses, welding gloves and supplies included. Dress code for safety: long pants (can change at shop), long sleeve shirt and enclosed shoes (tennis shoes OK - no sandals).

Welding, Advanced (7/8/9) Tim Fay - (2 hrs) Rm 4209 (Session II only)
Pick up where you left off in welding and explore more welding processes. Explore stick welding and oxy-fuel processes. Design and build a windmill using your creativity with sheet metal and plate steel. Mandatory attendance first day of class due to safety issues. Dress code for safety: long pants (can change at shop), long sleeve shirt, and enclosed shoes (tennis shoes OK - no sandals). **Prerequisite: Welding.
